Meta Pays $18 Billion to Settle Teen Privacy Lawsuits, Imposes Restrictions on Under-18s
Meta Platforms Inc. (META) has reached a settlement agreement worth up to $18 billion in lawsuits alleging that the company’s Facebook and Instagram platforms were used to collect data from underage users without proper parental consent. As part of the settlement, Meta will also impose default restrictions on all users under 18 across its platforms.
The settlement has been praised by consumer advocates and privacy experts, who say it represents a significant step forward in protecting children’s online safety. However, some critics argue that the settlement is too lenient and does not go far enough to address Meta’s broader data collection practices.
“This settlement sends a clear message to social media companies that they cannot exploit children’s privacy for profit,” said [NAME], a spokesperson for the coalition of state attorneys general. “It also sets an important precedent for holding these companies accountable for their actions.”
The settlement is subject to court approval and could take several months to finalize. Once approved, Meta will begin implementing the changes required by the agreement.
